The Oil & Gas industries are vital components of the Canadian economy, and also play an important role of its citizen’s day-to-day life. Located in remote areas such as rural Alberta, oil extraction and refinement facilities are where crude oil is extracted and turned into the petroleum that is used to power our cars, machinery, and various other utilities. The important role that these facilities play in our day to day life cannot be understated, and that is why their security is of utmost importance.

Why do you need Oil & Gas Extraction and Refinement Security?

Valuable assets such as copper wire, industrial batteries, and heavy machinery have made oil facilities a major target for criminal behavior.

Theft of the aforementioned critical assets are not only costly for the energy company to replace, but the absence of these assets can also cause downtime that leads to delays in production. An example of this type of theft happened at a TransGlobe Energy site in 2020.
Kevan Newman P.Eng, the Canadian Production Manager at TransGlobe described it as “a major theft at our main oil battery that caused over $50,000 in damages, not including lost production for the 3 days we were down”.

How do we secure these critical facilities?

We secure your oil extraction and refinement facilities using our industry leading technology, innovative video monitoring service, and other preventive measures such as ‘no trespassing’ security signage.
Video security units equipped with stationary and PTZ (Pan, Tilt, Zoom) cameras are strategically placed to monitor the perimeter of a site. At our UL Certified Monitoring Center, our highly skilled video monitoring operators work diligently to detect and deter criminal behavior through the utilization of these security units. For areas that may be difficult to access with a traditional security camera or that require additional security coverage, we offer our wireless alarm intrusion device, syncroDetect. This device can be equipped with both door & window contact sensors and wireless motion detectors that will immediately alert our operators when tripped.
Once suspicious or criminal behavior is detected, our video monitoring operators will utilize security peripherals such as live communication speakers for voice commands and our blue LED strobe light for visual deterrence. If the suspect is not deterred, our operators will immediately contact local law enforcement providing them with in-depth details such as suspect’s behavior, location, and description. From here, our operators work closely with law enforcement until the threat is contained. Once the threat is mitigated, an in-depth security report is logged into our proprietary syncroReports software. This portal is the first security information reporting platform in the world. SyncroReports is your team’s central access point to reports, live video monitoring feeds, and robust site specific security analytics. Kevan Newman from TransGlobe Energy describes syncroReports as a platform that “provides confidence that our sites are being looked after”.

A major advantage of utilizing our security devices is our proprietary data communication, handled through a completely private, MPLS cellular network. Since our network is completely segregated from public internet, your security data is secure from cyberattacks such as bots and hackers that are always present on traditional internet connections. Another advantage of utilizing wireless cellular network connections is there is only a requirement of power to operate our service. In instances where shore power may not be available, we can deploy or modular solar units to secure these more remote & undeveloped areas. This unique and proprietary advantage allows us to provide security in the remote locations that oil fields are often located.

Don't just take our word for it...

“For our industry, the service is worth as it prevents major thefts from happening… The word is getting out to the criminal community in our area and our sites are less attractive for criminals to come and steal from us thanks to Caliber’s remote video monitoring service.”
– Kevan Newman P. Eng, Production Manager – Canada, TransGlobe Energy Corporation
In March 2021, a TransGlobe Energy site in Alberta was the target of an attempted material & precious metal theft. Due to our security devices and monitoring service, our team was able to detect the thieves, and contact the client & RCMP, who successfully apprehended the suspects and retrieved the stolen material.
TransGlobe Energy Corporation is only one of the many clients that have benefited greatly through the deployment of our industry leading security devices and innovative video monitoring service.
