The cover of night offers criminals a window of opportunity to trespass and commit theft and vandalism. How do infrared night vision cameras bring criminals into the light?
The dangers of darkness.
Many criminals strike under the cover of darkness, at times when properties are empty and unattended. Criminals know the dark can keep them hidden from view and allow them to move throughout a property without being detected.
Properties of all types are more vulnerable at night – including construction sites, commercial properties, critical infrastructure compounds, recycling facilities, and more. Many of these sites have little to no light sources available once the sun sets, even more so in remote locations where there may be no power infrastructure. They contain many different areas and assets that are covered by darkness and more easily targeted under darker conditions. With the after-hours night security of these properties at risk, employing infrared night vision cameras is imperative to detecting and deterring crime under dark and low light conditions.
Infrared night vision camera technology in a nutshell.
We leverage cutting edge technology to power our night vision security cameras. All of our cameras – from stationary, to PTZ, and license plate readers are equipped with Infrared night vision capabilities.
Infrared cameras identify the absence of light and automatically switch to ‘night mode’, which changes the image to a black and white colour palette which should look very familiar to anyone who has seen night vision camera footage on TV or the web. In order to bypass the night vision feature during the day, IR cut filters automatically engage during daytime hours to block infrared colours, which prevents the daytime footage from having a bright pink/red tone on all the images. However, when the sun sets, ‘night mode’ is engaged, the IR cut filter is removed, allowing the full amount of light to hit the camera sensor, in turn flooding the area with invisible infrared light. This improves visibility for our Live Remote Video Monitoring operators, causing criminals to stand out among the darkness.
Our long zoom PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) cameras capture high-resolution footage even in the darkest of conditions. Infrared night vision technology is leveraged by our Monitoring team on a nightly basis to detect and deter crime.
Infrared night vision at work.
Outdoor security cameras with night vision are proven to help deter crime after-hours. In September 2023, an individual who was trespassing at a commercial property hid in some thick brush to evade detection. It would typically be difficult to see the person through the foliage, but thanks to the night vision security camera installed on-site, our Monitoring Operators were able to see them as clear as day. Police arrived to question and release the suspect with a warning not to return.
In January 2024, an individual trespassed onto a hydro property with the intent to steal important materials. They snuck onto the property and hid among the spools of wire, hoping they wouldn’t be detected. Our Monitoring team immediately dispatched Police to the scene, who apprehended the suspect before they could steal any assets. With the suspect striking under the cover of night on a low-light property, it would have been much more difficult to detect and apprehend them without an IR night vision security camera.
Another night watch security incident we mitigated in January 2024 also highlights the need for IR night vision cameras. A small group of trespassers attempted to gain access to a nearly finished home on an active construction site. They were spotted from a distance by our Monitoring team using the IR night vision capabilities on a PTZ camera, and it wasn’t long before Police arrived to the scene to apprehend the trespassers – dispatched by our vigilant Remote Video Monitoring Operators.
Every instance of trespassing and theft during night hours proves the need for businesses to employ IR night vision cameras & live remote video monitoring to effectively deter crime at night.
The benefits of IR night vision.
Our Infrared night vision cameras leverage our cutting edge technology to help deter crime at night. Many thefts on construction sites and similar properties occur under the cover of darkness; IR night vision helps our Operators easily detect and deter crime at night, and the high-resolution feeds allow them to collect important details such as physical description, location, and behaviour. These images are transmitted over our secure MPLS network to our UL Certified Monitoring facility, where they are proactively monitoring for incidences of trespassing, and more nefarious crimes.
