As we all know, industries that need security can expose devices to harsh environmental elements such as rain, snow, ice, and even dust. Our way to combat this was to make our products tougher. This was achieved by using NEMA rated enclosures on all of our security devices. The NEMA rating is used as a standard of quality and safety of the enclosures protecting electrical components from various environmental hazards.

What is NEMA?

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) is a standards developing organization, where business leaders, electrical experts, engineers, scientists, and technicians come together to create and implement the quality/safety standards of over 700 electrical products.

The NEMA Enclosure Rating System: Setting The Standard

The NEMA Enclosure Rating System provides a baseline for the various environments where the electrical enclosures can be used safely. The rating is based on how well the enclosure protects from exposures to liquid, rain, ice, corrosion, dust, and debris. The NEMA enclosure rating depends on a wide variety of factors.

For example, which materials used to build the enclosure and what the quality of these materials are. This system is not only beneficial for the manufacturer, it is also helpful for the consumer by providing assurance on the durability and safety of the enclosure which houses the electrical components on their property. There are multiple key advantages to utilizing a NEMA rated enclosure on the security products protecting your site. The NEMA rating means that the electrical components are safe from the environment, and that any person who is around the unit is safe from the potentially dangerous electrical components inside.
Additionally, the NEMA rating states what the unit can physically handle, which in-turn prevents any damage coming to the unit or to an individual who may have contact with it. Another advantage is peace of mind; not having to worry about the elements affecting the security of your site. This allows our clients’ to focus on more important issues within the site itself, whilst not having to worry about the security being compromised by inclement weather, dust, debris, or other environmental factors.

What are our security device enclosures rated at?

So what are the enclosures of our remote video monitoring units & wireless alarm systems rated at? We currently utilize NEMA Type 4X rated enclosures. This means our unit is safe for both indoor and outdoor use in any climate, warm or cold. Additionally, Type 4X rating is also proven to protect from various liquids such as; rain, sleet, snow and splashing water, while also protecting from solid objects like dirt, dust and any ice that may form on or around the unit. The Type 4X stands out from other similar ratings like the Type 4, and those below it, because it provides the components with protection from corrosion, which the lower ratings do not.

The big picture:

Overall, the security and safety of your property is of utmost importance to our team. This is why we utilize NEMA 4X Rated enclosures on our current generation of remote video monitoring units, and all syncroDetect wireless alarm systems.
