Artificial intelligence, or AI, is described as a computer completed function that would typically require the intelligence and input of a human(1).
Just like humans, AI starts off small, and over time, the more it is taught and develops, the more intelligent and powerful it will ultimately become. The use of AI is associated with a plethora of benefits and advantages such as reliability, 24/7 operation, and quicker decision-making capabilities(3).
Current Trends within the AI world
1. AI in E-Commerce
AI development is a fast paced field that is constantly evolving. What is big in the AI world now may be considered miniscule in only a year. For example, with the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen a large shift from retail shopping over to e-commerce. AI technology has made this shift as well, with the advancement of personalized online shopping experiences(4).
The goal of these AI functions are to use customer browser history, cookies, and general interests to streamline the shopping experience when searching through e-commerce catalogues. AI has also been enhancing the shopping experience for retailers and consumers by developing systems that can identify and handle fraudulent product reviews(5).
This is accomplished by scanning the reviews, and when the text within a product review is too predictable to have been written by a human, the review is flagged or removed by the AI system. This AI function helps bridge the gap & heal the distrust that has formed between brands and consumers in result of both positive and negative fraudulent reviews.
2. AI-enabled Conceptual Design
E-commerce isn’t the only industry that has been experiencing advanced AI integration. The design industry is experimenting with a new trend of AI-enabled conceptual design. This is the process of using AI technology to create visual designs from only a text description(6).
3. AI in Automobiles
With automobiles beginning to incorporate more complex and electronic based components, we have seen a massive shift towards AI-powered functions being integrated in personal and commercial vehicles. The most wildly known form of artificial intelligence powered features within a vehicle would be the new ‘self-driving module(10).
Companies such as Tesla, Mercedes, and Cadillac all have experimented with the self-drive feature. This AI-powered function allows your car to start, stop, turn, and even pass cars in left lanes, without you ever having to put your hands on the wheel. Other driver assisting features include automatic breaking, driver drowsiness detection, and hands free parking. As of 2021, these features are only really found in luxury cars, but as time progresses, you can expect all forms of cars to feature some kind of AI-powered self-driving or driver assisting function.
Self-driving cars are even beginning to make their way into commercial based services such as AutoX; a company that utilizes self-driving cars to deliver groceries. Drive.AI, which is a Mountain View, California based company has also utilized AI driven vehicles to transport passengers around from point A to B using fixed routes that have been programmed into the AI technology(11).
